Hvalvatn – Technical Diving in a Remote Highland Lake
Hvalvatn is a remote lake in the mountains above Hvalfjörður in West Iceland, the lake that feeds the Glymur waterfall. It is one of the quiet, mysterious lakes of the Icelandic Highlands that are perfect for technical diving: serene surroundings, crystal-clear freshwater and a dive that combines tranquility with adventure. We dive Hvalvatn as a tailored technical trip, planned with the divers who come along and priced on request. Still choosing? See all our technical dive sites in Iceland.
The dive
A trip to Hvalvatn is a journey into the wilderness rather than an ordinary dive tour. The lake lies far from towns and everyday life, and the journey in is part of the experience. Once you are in, you have crystal-clear freshwater, cold and still, in surroundings where there is nothing around you but the landscape. Dives are made in a dry suit.
Because every trip here is planned individually, we go through the plan with you in advance: the dive, the configuration you dive with, whether CCR, sidemount or a twinset, and the gas you need. We provide nitrox, oxygen and helium fills and sorb for rebreathers, priced on request.
Who is it for
Hvalvatn is a technical dive for certified technical divers who want a journey into the wilderness as much as the dive. Interested in technical diving but not yet trained for it? Have a look at our technical diving courses.
