Journey to the Center of the Earth – A 4-Day Snæfellsnes Dive & Explore Tour

Explore the peninsula where Jules Verne imagined the entrance to the centre of the Earth. Beneath the glacier-capped volcano of Snæfellsjökull, discover a coastline shaped by lava, the Atlantic and centuries of life by the sea.

Over four days, dive from volcanic shores, venture by boat into the island-filled waters of Breiðafjörður and explore Snæfellsnes above and below the surface. Between dives, follow coastal roads through fishing villages, lava fields and dramatic landscapes.

Icedive arranges the diving, accommodation, breakfast, ground transport and boat logistics in one tailored package.

4 days · 3 nights · 4 guided dives · Reykjavík start and finish

Three shore dives and one boat dive. Private departures from two divers.
Optional fifth day with dives at Silfra and Davíðsgjá.

The Experience

A glacier-capped volcano, ancient fishing shores and a bay scattered with islands: Snæfellsnes offers a remarkable setting for a diving journey.

This tour pairs one guided dive each day with time to discover the peninsula on land. Explore its coastal waters, visit small communities and see how volcanic forces and the ocean have shaped both the landscape and the lives of the people who settled here.

Your guides adapt the dive locations and daily timings to conditions, bringing together the underwater experience and the journey between sites.

Your 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Volcanic Landscapes and Your First Dive

1 guided shore dive

Leave Reykjavík and travel west towards Snæfellsnes. A planned stop at Gerðuberg introduces the peninsula’s volcanic character, with striking basalt columns rising above the surrounding landscape.

Continue to Stykkishólmur, where colourful houses and a working harbour overlook Breiðafjörður. Your first shore dive is planned near Súgandisey, introducing you to the local waters and giving you time to settle in with your equipment and guides.

Day 2 – Into the Islands of Breiðafjörður

1 guided boat dive

Set out from Stykkishólmur into a seascape of islands, islets and skerries.

A guided boat dive takes you beneath the surface of Breiðafjörður, with the site chosen for the day’s conditions. The boat journey is part of the experience, offering views of the scattered islands and the coastline beyond.

Back on land, explore Stykkishólmur and its surroundings as the day’s schedule allows.

Day 3 – Fishing Heritage Beneath Snæfellsjökull

1 guided shore dive

Travel towards the western tip of the peninsula, where lava fields reach the sea beneath Snæfellsjökull.

Your shore dive is planned at Keflavíkurvör near Hellissandur, an old landing place that connects the underwater experience with Iceland’s fishing heritage.

Between diving and travel, selected stops introduce you to the landscapes of Snæfellsjökull National Park. A visit to Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum or a guided descent into Vatnshellir lava cave can be arranged as an optional addition, subject to timing and availability.

Day 4 – Arnarstapi and the Southern Coast

1 guided shore dive

Complete your Snæfellsnes tour with a shore dive near Arnarstapi, where volcanic rock meets the Atlantic along a dramatic stretch of coastline.

Above the water, cliffs, rock formations and coastal views provide a memorable setting for your final day on the peninsula. Follow the southern side of Snæfellsnes back towards Reykjavík, with selected scenic stops along the way.

Return to Reykjavík after four days of diving and discovery around one of Iceland’s most distinctive peninsulas, or extend your journey with a freshwater diving day in Þingvellir National Park.

Extend Your Journey – Silfra & Davíðsgjá

Optional Day 5 · 2 guided freshwater dives

Add an extra day to your trip and finish with two freshwater dives in Þingvellir National Park.

After exploring the Atlantic shores of Snæfellsnes, discover a different underwater world at Silfra and Davíðsgjá. Clear freshwater, submerged fissures and striking rock formations create a memorable finale to your Iceland diving journey.

This optional extension includes an additional night in Reykjavík with breakfast, return transport to Þingvellir, two guided dives, tanks, air fills and weights.
